STUNNING STARGAZING EVENING
LONEHILL SEES STARS
Friday evening, 5th June 2009 was when it happened. The stars came out and more than 250 Lonehill residents were there to see them!
Thanks to Elmari Dell and her hardworking team, members from Astonomy Africa brought along a number of telescopes, a team of actors with a star story, a lot of knowledge, and great enthusiasm, to the Lonehill Park just below the dam, to expose some heavenly treasures to the lucky residents who had purchased tickets for the occasion.
The play was great for the kids, the astronomy lesson was great and highly informative for the older kids and adults, the stars were brilliant and the company was good. People brought along their picnic baskets, and there was even a birthday party present!
Clear skies made for perfect viewing and indeed there were some spectacular sights. Saturn's rings were just a few degrees off being almost invisible as it's plane changes - once every 14 years! The two dancing stars that make up the bottom pointer for the Southern Cross were crystal clear, as was the amazing Jewellery Box and many more heavenly treasures.
Needless to say, it was COLD. But, hot chocolate was available to warm up the tummies. Of course, the light sticks for the kids seemed to totally overshadow to stargazing event! As always!
These are a few pictures of the event and the equipment that was available for us to truly appreciate exactly how insignificant we really are in the great universe!
