DADS & LADS CAMP-OUT
16.05.2009 - 00:00

Well, the Dads & Lads Camp-out was an absolute hit with the kids (and the Dads had a great time as well - you know...nice and relaxing away from Mom!).  Although, having said that, quite a few of the Dads were phoning home to request the home delivery service for a number of forgotten items, so the Moms got to see exactly where we were.

Getting to the site was very exciting for all.  We did an 'amazing race' type of clue trail with four clues and tasks.  First one was to the Fire Station and up the tower to assemble a paper South African flag that had been cut into sections before they got their map to the next location.  This was the Village Church where the 'team' had to transfer a load of little plastic balls, one at a time, between two boxes 10m apart - much huffing and puffing!  The next location was outside Fabz where the kids had to assemble a bead necklace, and the last location was at Crawford Prep School, where they had to complete a wildlife puzzle before being given the location of the camp....which was at the Lonehill Koppie!

The tents went up and the kids explored the koppie and participated in many interesting activities, all laid on by the Lonehill Scout Troop.  Later in the evening, hotdogs and boerie rolls were served, the campfire was started and songs were sung, games were played, marshmellows were toasted and burnt...and many discussions were had until the late hours around the warmth of the fire.  Then came the rain...! And the cold!  And the snoring!  There were some really amazing night sounds to be heard - wildlife sounds I'm talking about.

Early in the morning at about 6.00am, before the sparrows even performed their morning ritual, the little guys were up and about and up the koppie, again!  Breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausages was served by the Scouts and the camp was struck.

There were more than twice the number of campers compared to last year, with all saying that there were many more who would loved to have been able to participate.  Well, there's always next year - what will that bring, I wonder, and where???
